US Senate Urges Department of Defense to Explore Blockchain for National Security
The US Senate Committee on Armed Services has issued a directive to the Department of Defense (DOD) to investigate the potential of blockchain technology for national security purposes. This directive is part of the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) report, which was released on July 9, 2024. The committee recognizes that blockchain has the ability to secure supply chains, enhance data integrity, and protect against data manipulation by adversaries.

Enhancing Defense Supply Chains with Blockchain
The Senate committee believes that blockchain can significantly improve the cryptographic integrity of defense supply chains. By utilizing blockchain, the data within these supply chains can be made tamper-proof and transparent, reducing the risk of data corruption and strengthening overall national security.

Secretary of Defense, Retired General Lloyd Austin, has been tasked with providing a briefing on blockchain applications by April 1, 2025. The briefing will include six key findings, including a plan for pilot programs and research to explore the use of blockchain in national security. Areas of focus will include supply chain management, cybersecurity for critical infrastructure, and procurement auditability.

Exploring Blockchain for Global Supply Chains and Cybersecurity
The Senate report also calls for an analysis of the advantages and risks associated with blockchain in supply chain tracking and management. This analysis will include an examination of how blockchain is currently being adopted in the supply chain industry, both in the US and internationally, including countries like China and Russia. Additionally, the report aims to determine the feasibility and cost estimates of implementing blockchain technology in these areas.

Furthermore, the committee is interested in exploring the broader applications of blockchain, particularly in the field of cybersecurity for critical infrastructure. The goal is to develop secure, transparent, and auditable data systems that support various national security objectives.

Republican Party Supports Bitcoin and Crypto Rights
In a policy update on July 8, 2024, the campaign website of Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump included support for Bitcoin and the adoption of cryptocurrencies. The draft policy of the Republican National Committee affirms the right to mine Bitcoin and ensures that Americans have the ability to self-custody their digital assets without interference from the government.
